What Do We Need a Union For?: The Twua in the South, 1945-1955 by Timothy J. Minchin,

Thomas Terrill, University of South Carolina The rise in standards of living throughout the U.S. in the wake of World War II brought significant changes to the lives of southern textile workers. Mill workers' wages rose, their purchasing power grew, southern textile and their economic expectations increased -- with litre help from the unions. Timothy Minchin argues that the reasons behind the failure of textile unions in the postwar South lie not in stereotypical assumptions of mill workers' passivity or anti-union hostility but in these large-scale social changes. Minchin addresses the challenges faced by the TWUA competition from nonunion mills that matched or exceeded union wages, charges of racism southern textile and radicalism within the union, southern textile and conflict between its northern southern textile and southern branches -- southern textile and focuses especially on the devastating general strike of 1951. Drawing extensively on oral histories southern textile and archival records, he presents a close look at southern textile communities within the context of the larger history of southern labor, linking events in the textile industry to the broader social southern textile and economic impact of World War II on American society.

Southern Textile Association - The Southern Textile Association, or STA, was established in 1908. It is a nonprofit organization for individuals in the textile and related industries who have a common interest in all phases of textile manufacturing.

Operation Dixie - Operation Dixie was the name of the post-war campaign by the Congress of Industrial Organizations to unionize industry in the Southern United States, particularly the textile industry. The campaign ran from 1946 to 1953 in 12 Southern states and was undertaken in order to consolidate gains made by the trade union movement in the Northern United States during the war and block the status of the South as a "non-union" low-wage haven to which businesses could relocate.
